Worst Move Ever:

This process has been so heinous that I can’t begin to list everything that has gone wrong so I’ll try chronological and that should cover the main events.

Monday June 28th:
This was the day we were supposed to take possession. Normally you get the keys anywhere between noon and 6pm but I knew that the previous owners were moving out that day so I was expecting closer to the late side.

4:30 rolls around and I figure I’ll give the lawyer a call just to check in and his assistant tells me that there is a small problem and the lawyer will call me back. An hour later no call so I call them again. Assistant tells me that they have misplaced the check that is supposed to go to the other lawyer and the other lawyer won’t give them the key without the check. She says they are still looking and will call me back.

6:00 pm hits and I call again as I know the lawyers generally close at 6pm and they still haven’t called me back. She says the other lawyer is being stubborn and won’t give them the key, it will have to close tomorrow. I tell her to cut a cheque out of their own money in the meantime and get this thing done. She says that this is their plan but the banks are closed now so it has to wait for morning. At this point she also tells me that they have been looking for the cheque since 2:00 pm……………

My reaction to this was best described as rabid. Bad enough that they misplaced a bank draft for that kind of money but they knew the cheque was missing, and didn’t bother to tell me about it or do anything about it until after the banks were closed. I told her to get my lawyer to call, not her, the guy with his name on the building, not his bumbling assistant. She tells me he has left for the day, I tell her to find him. Bottom line, my lawyer is a partner in the largest law firm in town, and the other lawyer was simply being stubborn, he knew they were good for the money and was punishing me for the lawyer’s mistake.

She finds my lawyer, he calls the other lawyer, I’m finally told I can come and get my keys. Time, 7:30 pm.

Get my key, head over to the house, try to open the front door…….odd, screen door is locked, key must be for the side door. NOPE!

The people we bought from had this clever idea, we’ll leave the key to the shed’s padlock inside, then lock the key we let ourselves out with in the shed. Clever, but only if you don’t lock the fucking screen door which covers the door to which you gave the key to the lawyers………….. Bloody normal screen door? Fuck no, too easy, hidden hinges, storm door, key lock of its own.

1 and a half hours later, many calls to the lawyers and real estate agents later, my buddy Duke manages to pick the screen door lock with a screwdriver. Finally inside, 9pm.
At this point, we were so far behind we had to get something done so Duke and I stayed up until 5 am scrapping off wallpaper, sanding, and generally prepping to paint the main floor.

Tuesday June 29th:
Get a coat of paint on the living room and dining room, get a sense of just how poorly this paint is covering. Deep red over whitish orange, not so good. More on that later.

Coat of paint is done, getting on 4 pm, call U-haul about my truck as they had not yet called me……can you sense where this is going? 5:30, they have yet to call me back, as the truck place closes at 7pm I have to head back over to the apartment, 45 minute drive and still need to get to U-haul after that. Still nothing from U-haul, whom you get busy signals trying to call for 40 minutes and then when you do get through your on hold for another 45 minutes. Finally get through on a call to leave the line free that they are supposed to call, they tell me no truck yet, but they PROMISE to call me back that night.

Getting past 9 pm, Duke and I say fuck it and head back to the house. Get back to the house, prep the hallway for its first coat, fall asleep exhausted about 2 am.

Wednesday June 30th:
Get up at 7am as that’s when U-haul opens, call. On hold 45 minutes, guy swears they will call me back. I explain that I need to be out of my apartment that day and need a fucking truck. He says they will call back. I say that’s what they said yesterday and they never did, I need a fucking truck. His response, "ya ya ya ya, there are 100 people ahead of you"……..blood pressure rising.

Rather than head back to the apartment and wait Duke and I figure screw it, might as well paint. Get a second coat of the red done, get a first coat of the hallway light grey done. Lo and behold, its now 4:30, still no U-haul call. Wife phones, finally gets through, and is told a truck is now ready, I can pick it up. It is now 6:15, the place closes at 7:00.

Drive like a lunatic, get there at 6:59. There are 40 people in line ahead of me, they take 3 at a time and each person takes about 15 minutes. Do the math.

I sit in line for 3 hours until it is finally my turn, 10 pm, I’m at the counter.

“Sir, we don’t have your truck”

“You called me at 6:15 and said you had my truck, I got here at 7:00, how do you lose a truck in 45 minutes?”

As it turns out, the central booking group assigns trucks based on when they are supposed to be returned, which bears no relation to when people actually return them. She calls the person, tells them to bring the damn truck back, he says ½ hour away. Guy finally arrives, truck is leaking oil and can’t go back out. 10:30 pm, I’m waffling between furious and numb. They find me a truck at a different location, tell them to stay open till I arrive (keep in mind approaching 4 hours past closing at this point), I go.

11:30, arrive back at the apartment with the truck. Take cab back to the rental place, pick up my car, drive back. 12:30 am.

Go up to the apartment, wife asks me to walk the dog……………….

Now at least the wife has talked to the super and he has said moving out on the 1st is not a problem, that helps, or would have been loading all night. He could have tried to screw us for another month’s rent, but he was nice about it, and at this stage I needed some nice.

Drive back to the house, sit outside, have a couple smokes, drink a beer, collapse into an exhausted sleep.

July 1st:
Drive back over to the apartment, begin the move out, 10:00 am. 3 manly men figure 3 hours tops. 7 hours later, apartment key dropped off at super. Drive to new house, now 6pm. Unload, get stuff thrown into the house, close door, 9pm. Manly men helpers go home.

A quick note on the paint, added a third coat to the front and back walls as I just want to put up some curtains, needs a fourth…………at least.

Note to all: Deep deep red, looks awesome when done, doesn’t cover worth a shite.

There is more, like trying to hook up the fucking ice maker on the fridge to the plumbing, and of course the furnace flooding, but I digress.

In short,

WORST MOVE EVER!

Poor bastard. Everything's so tedious... it's amazing anyone gets anything done.

Hang in there.

Wow that sucks. Not that any move ever goes well but it certainly sounded like you had more bad luck than average! And yeah, U-Haul is notorious for taking a reservation but not actually having a truck for you. Evil or Very Mad

Quite a list of links toward the end of that page . . . plenty of U-Haul angst to go around!

Dutch, hope things are getting settled for you. Let me know when it's time to host pics of the new pad. Smile

Living Room, Dining Room, and kitchen painted now (thank christ), yanked up the hideous carpet and will now spend 3 days trying to eradicate the disintegrated underpadding dust which now coats everything on the entire first floor (sigh). After that its get the last coat of paint on the hallway and stairs, put the baseboards back on so I can start setting up the basement and last, but not least, refinish the hardwood that was criminally hidden beneath the 70's brown shag carpet. Once thats done it will actually look nice and I'll accost you for pictures. Surprised

I am tired, I will die in this house unless I somehow end up with enough money that I can pay others to do everything associated with moving and decorating and all I have to do is drive over.

I am tired.

Thought I would provide a not surprising update.

Yesterday, checked my visa bill online and lo and behold here is an additional charge from U-haul.

I phone them up, whats this extra charge on my bill? They tell me its a late return charge, I tell them I got the truck at 11:00 pm, returned it 9:00 pm, I had 24 hours.

Please hold.

I'm sorry sir, it was not for late return, it was for not gassing up. I tell them I most definitely gassed it up, I made a special point of checking the gage just before leaving the lot after dropping it off. Well it says here 1/4 tank sir, you got it at 3/8ths. I tell them I returned it 3/8ths.

Eventually the assisstant manager comes on and tells me that if I come by with my gas receipt and it shows a reasonable amount of gas was put in she would refund the charge.

Now the charge was for $43, and I happen to know from listening to the many unhappy people who were returning while I was waiting in line to pick up that this consists of a $20 flat fee and $1 per litre for the gas.

I go in and confirm with the assisstant manager that they do in fact claim to have required 23 litres of gas to top up to 3/8ths of a tank. I pulled out my reciept for the 34 litres I had pumped in and ask her how it is possible that this truck managed to use 57 litres of gas to travel 45kms. 18 wheelers carrying lead get better mileage than that.

I get my refund.

It is a very rare organization that actually makes it policy to try and screw their customers, u-haul appears to be one of them.

Need a truck? tell them no problem because when we don't end up having one they will have no choice but to take what we give them when we give it.

Ooooh, after hours drop slot return! Claim it wasn't gassed up, chances are they can't prove they did!

What a flaming bunch of jackholes.

This makes me not want to use U-Haul. Seriously. Do we think that it's U-Haul specifically, or all moving truck rental places in general?

It's generally all of them. When you get down to people that make less than ten dollars an hour...

You get what they get paid for. Yeah, it costs you a shitload to rent the truck, but the guys you need to depend on make dick... and they serve you accordingly.

It's all of them. Not just U-Haul.

I'm told that u-haul is the worst for overbooking reservations but I expect everyone else is equally crooked when it comes to drop slot returns.

If I have to do this again I'm going to ask in advance when I book if whatever company I'm talking to are reserving me a truck that is supposed to be returned that day or whether the truck will be there on that day, waiting for me. Might not do me any good but its about the only thing I can think of.
